September 19, 2011–People have a tendency to look at the small picture—their immediate surroundings, even at work. However, when utilizing BI, the big picture is the only one that will suffice, as we learned from an eBiz article, “Harnessing Social Business Intelligence.”
The most interesting point raised was that Business intelligence must look at the whole ecosystem. Stating “Looking just at one’s own databases, or even the information that business partners have, is no longer adequate. Having the big picture today means connecting internal business data to external information streams, live and without delay if possible. Data outside of your organization also outnumbers internal data by many orders of magnitude, so sifting through the integrated whole to spot trends and important issues quickly enough to drive business decisions is the objective.”
Social BI is catching on and getting crowded, frankly. Previously unknown players like Dachis Group, Social Cast and a ton of others litter the landscape. Are these fly-by-night operations or serious helpers? Hard to tell. Before we’d invest a bundle in an unproven social BI commodity, we’d wait to see if a leader emerges.
